Best Health Insurance Plans in Singapore

What is Health Insurance?

Health insurance helps to cover the cost of healthcare if you get sick, injured or disabled and require hospitalisation. All Singaporeans are covered under the government scheme known as MediShield Life. This health plan helps to cover for large medical expenses.

Should I get Health Insurance in Singapore?

Private insurers offer both Integrated Shield Plans (an upgrade of MediShield Life) and International Health Plans. MediShield Life payouts are pegged at the costs of Class B2/C wards. However, if you would like to have coverage that protects you for the cost of Class A and above, then the MediShield Life may not be sufficient to suit your needs. With the Integrated Shield Plan, you will be able to enjoy greater benefits and options such as higher coverage limit and coverage in private hospitals.

What do you have to consider before buying an Integrated Shield Plan Insurance?

Hospitalisation coverage

Health Insurance helps to pay for large hospital bills and selected costly outpatient treatments. However, Health Insurance seldom covers the full expenses. Patients may have to bear a proportion of the medical expenses in the form of a deductible, co-insurance, and any expenses above the claim limit.

Pre/post-hospitalisation coverage

Health Insurance covers the medical expenses relating to pre-hospital admission and post-hospital discharge, from diagnosis to early-stage treatment to recovery. The actual length of cover differs for each plan, which can range from 100 days to 365 days.

Non-fixed premiums

Premiums increase proportionately along with age. This means anyone can apply for a Health Insurance as long as they are under the maximum entry age of 65 to 80 years old, depending on the plan.

Private vs Public Hospitals

You should consider which type of hospital you would prefer before you purchase a health insurance policy. While many people may believe that a public hospital is enough, they may not realise that in the event of an urgent need for surgery, you would be placed behind many others on the waiting list. Therefore, if you would like to be treated in a shorter waiting period, you may want to consider private hospitalisation coverage.
